BETHESDA CENTRAL FARM MARKET'S 1ST ANNUAL "BAKE BETHESDA A PIE" CONTEST

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 5, 2010

You have enjoyed the great food from Bethesda Central Farm Market all spring and summer now it's your turn to show us what you can do with a pie. This exciting contest will be judged by some of Washington's top food professionals: Bonnie Benwick from The Washington Post, Carole Sugarman Food Editor, Bethesda Magazine, Nancy Hickman, Buzz Bakery and Deann O'Brien, The Gazette.

We invite you to bake, eat and have lots of fun with us at the market!

"Bake Bethesda a Pie" Contest Rules

  1. The contest is open to adults 18 years or older.
  2. Amateur bakers only. No professional bakers can enter this competition.(A professional is defined as someone who works for a bakery, works for or owns a catering company or sells pies).
  3. There is a $5 donation fee for each pie entered. The donation will go to Manna Food Bank. Each contestant must fill out a completed entry form located at our website www.bethesdacentralfarmmarket.com. A separate entry form must be completed for each pie entered. Entries will be accepted through August 31, 2010 at 5 pm. The entries may be e-mailed to moserdebra@aol.com or turned in to the INFO TENT at the Sunday markets.
  4. A recipe must accompany your pie. All recipes must be turned in complete with ingredient list on a 3" x 5" card, with the recipe name and contestant name. Winners agree to have their recipe, name, and pie photographed and published without compensation or reimbursement to the owner.
  5. A limit of 2 pies per person. Pies must be fruit pies, savory pies, or any type of pie that does not require refrigeration before serving.
  6. Crusts and Filling must be made from scratch. No store brought crust, dough, or can fillings may be used. Each pie must contain at least a bottom crust. Bake in a disposable 9" pie tin. Pies & Pie tins will not be returned.
  7. Pies must be prepared & baked by the individual submitting the pie entry for judging.
  8. Please do not write your name on the pie tins. Your entry will be assigned a number at registration to allow for anonymity during judging.
  9. Pies must be dropped off between 9 am & 10 am- Sunday, September 5th at the Bethesda Central Farm Market.

Judging

Each pie will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Overall appearance (20%) Crust color, flavor, texture and doneness (30%) Filling consistency, doneness, flavor (30%) Originality (10%)
  • The decision of the judges is final. Judges will not know participants names
  • Judging starts at 11am sharp
  • The public is invited to watch the judging
  • The winners will be announced immediately following the close of judging

Awards will be made for both the Fruit Category and the Savory category

  • 1st Place: $100 GIFT CERTIFICATE
  • 2nd Place: $50 GIFT CERTIFICATE
  • 3rd Place: $25 GIFT CERTIFICATE
to local restaurants, shops and Bethesda Central Farm Market

Fund-raiser

All donations proceeds will benefit Manna Food Bank, the Bethesda Central Farm Market Designated Non-Profit partner.
